All about food

In Spain, a lot is about food, if not everything. So when you meet up with people, there’s always food involved. Inevitably, there is a moment that the food will be eaten until the last piece. No one ever takes that last bit silently, hoping that no one will notice. The etiquette here is that someone eventually will ask: “Who would like to have the last piece?”

Careful now

Don’t say “yes”, no matter how much you would like that last bit. Even if you’re still starving (if that’s possible). Even if your mouth is watering, your stomach is making longingly noises… you can’t. If you’ve had your mind set on that last piece, and someone else asks ‘that last piece question’, you’ve lost.

Art of insisting

In Spain the person who points at the last bit, asking how wants it, wants that piece for him or her self. And then the only thing you can do is saying generously: “You take it!”. As if you really want the other person to have it. There might be even a bit of insisting here (I wrote about the Art of insisting before): The other says “no”, to which you insist, and that might repeat itself a few times. It’s not that bad. It’s Spain. There is always some place somewhere where you can find more food.
